Useful new book
A very useful publication has arrived today; Hugh Longworth’s BR Mark 1 & Mark 2 Coaching Stock (ISBN 978-0-86093-650-3) Ian Allan Publishing. This is to my mind a companion to the excellent volumes by Parkin and Harris respectively. Rather than try to go over the same ground as those excellent technical appraisals, this book carves…

Wagon Miscellany No1
As will already be obvious, I’m involved in converting to EM, a fairly substantial fleet of rolling stock. Here you can see two proprietary RTRS wagons from Bachmann, both of which were rather painlessly converted to EM, chiefly through removing a couple of strengthening ribs behind the axle guards. The first one is a very…

Carlsberg don’t do kits…
But if they did, this one would keep them on their toes! Just arrived in the post today is a new kit by Peter Stanger at 52F models. This is for the attractive C16 4-4-2 tank locomotive, formerly NBR Class L. 52F kits already have a reputation for innovative and intelligent design and even from…

Jumbo progress.
After the Jumbo had been primed and minor flaws attended to, I applied the first coats of utilitarian black paint. I now realise I haven’t attached the tender rear handrails as yet but apart from lamp irons and cab doors which I shall fabricate from plastic, the loco is essentially complete as far as the…

Van-tasmagoria!
This morning I finished off the diagram 1897 van, finishing off with some weathering, firstly with Tamiya acrylics then some weathering powder by Anita Decor which I purchased at Intermodellbau in Germany five years ago. I really ought to make more use of the stuff as you can generate some interesting effects with it, particularly…

Improvise, Adapt, Overcome
A consignment of tender wheels arrived today although I was slightly crestfallen to see that my supplier had provided OO wheels on pinpoints which were ultimately as much use as Nigel Farage to an Edinburgh taxi driver. After weighing up my options, I trawled my parts boxes and found a set of 14mm spoked Markits…

Love me tender…
I decided to crack on with the tender underframe for the Jumbo tonight following the arrival of frames from Caley Coaches. The Caley very thoughtfully settled on a standard tender chassis wheelbase during the Drummond/McIntosh/Lambie era and that means I was able to put something underneath the DJH castings. You can see the supplied arrangement…

Decks Cleared for Action!
Last night I decided enough was enough and mercilessly attacked my workshop, clearing the industrial level of clutter and reorganising the tool drawers in order that I can crack on and produce some proper EM kit. OK, I’ll admit the painting section needs a bit more work but come on, you never saw this place…

A Day Well-Spent
I finished the 12 ton steel van today, trying out some new effects with the airbrush and also with some powders. As I said when I started this project, these vehicles weathered in a way not dissimilar to a ship in my eye. How effective my attempt at recreating this is, I’ll leave for others…

Workshop developments
After a busy day, I wasn’t going be doing a massive amount of modelling tonight but a couple of hours’ work sees 54495 finally numbered and the steel bodied van recieving the first of it’s weathering. I took the opportunity to add rain strips above the door as 4mm van roofs just look too plain…
